Hey Friends!

In the last two episodes we have been talking about our mental health, and our current diagnosis and how we manage our current journeys. We also talked about the bad experiences we have with therapists or counselors.

I also want to add that we both have had positive experiences since the negative ones, and advocate for anyone to seek out professional help if you need it. It's important to take care of your mind!

On the second episode Rye & I talked about how he shared calming strategizes with me during a time I was struggling with my anxiety. We want to share it here for those who may need a few extra ideas to get through the tougher times.

When we are anxious or in a panicked state, our body shallows our breath and redirects oxygen towards our muscles to keep us ready to fight/flight. This can cause that feeling of shortness of breath and tightness in our chest. There are many ways to try to interrupt this. Some options to try:

  • Box breathing/square breathing: Inhale for four counts, hold your breath for four counts, exhale for four counts, hold for four counts, and then repeat. Try to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth for maximum oxygen flow. Here's a video you can watch to coach you through the counts and keep you focused.

  • 4-7-8 breathing: Inhale for four counts, hold for seven counts, and exhale for eight counts. Repeat. Remember to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. You can modify this to shorter counts (like 4-6-7 or 4-5-6) if it's too difficult to hold and exhale for that long, but the most helpful part of the exercise is to have a longer exhale than inhale.

We want to hear from you and your experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly!

How would you rate your therapy/counselor experiences?

  • 0%Mostly positive

  • 0%Mostly negative

  • 0%Never been

  • 0%Mixed experiences

We hope that you continue to join Rye & I on our show. Don't forget to take care of yourself, drink your water, and take your meds! <3
